A Child Chosen - Perspectives of an Adoptive Parent

P is for Pickel

by Marcie on August 29th, 2008

AJ and I often sit outside on our front porch in the morning as we wait for his bus to arrive. We talk about the morning, his school day, and kid stuff.

This morning, to my amazement, AJ told me that “P is for Pickel” (an abbreviation of our last name and thus spelled in that manner).  He’s been watching Sesame Street.

But what came next blew me away…

“Mama, M is for milk and Mama.”

So I said, “C is for Cole and car.”

And he responded with, “S is for snake and swing.”

He continued with several more letters and words, most of them correct.

It is amazing what kids know, isn’t it? What is really interesting about our conversation is that AJ asked to see my lips when he was trying to figure out the sounds of the words, almost like he was trying to figure out how the puzzle worked. I know he has both auditory and visual processing disorders but I am wondering if he is figuring out how the disorders work together to get to his answer (we know his hearing is fine).

He has done this type of problem solving before and it made me pause in wonder.

He’s a visual learner and is using speech therapy tricks all by himself!! You must be proud!

That must’ve been such an exciting moment for you! AJ is figuring it all out and it’s amazing to see his mind work, isn’t it? When my kids make a new discovery, it’s all I can do to not leap out of my skin.

What a great way to start your day!
