A Child Chosen - Perspectives of an Adoptive Parent

Adoption Nesting, the Martha Stewart Way

by Marcie on November 18th, 2007

With a pending adoption (and maybe even closer than we think?) I’ve been trying to nest again. You know, cleaning closest, managing the pantry, organizing toys, scrubbing the baseboards. Trust me…you’ll never have time to do it EVER again.

But, how would Martha Stewart do it? Or rather, how would other B5Media bloggers do it?

Julie at Declutter it is one of my fave fives…and has been since I entered the blogging world. (BTW, Julie is an adoptee and is on my list for guest bloggers. I think if we beg her enough she might just tag in.) Currently she has a post on organizing the linen closet, which I am in the process of doing (if only I had a linen closet). Our 1917 Chicago style bungalow did not come with the modern necessities. So, we have to create our own.

Last week I nested in the kitchen and tackled the pantry. Now, Julie is lucky enough to actually have a snack pantry (you go girl!). I have a pantry that is actually pretty large (thank goodness because I have no other cabinetry or counter space) but the shelving is irregular in shape and size, thus creating a big problem if a shelf breaks.

I did a good job though…my husband wanted to know exactly how much I threw out! Nothing. I just got rid of the boxes and organized. Whew.

Now, the real challenge in my house is the AJ’s closet (which is huge and is also acting as the linen closet and my closet right now, as we don’t have one in our room) laundry room, the toy room, and the work room. Hmmm…we have lots of rooms but no storage? We just need to maximize our space. I purchased these for AJ’s bedroom in our previous home and I am going to incorporate them into our new linen system in the laundry room.

They were perfect for storing his PJ’s and undershirts but will also make great storage for tablecloths, napkins, and extra towels.

The toy room needs additional shelving, the work room needs wall shelving, AJ’s closet needs an entire new system.

But, thats enough about my work…check out the new Lifestyles Channel for more organizing ideas, holiday festivities, and crafty fun.
