A Child Chosen - Perspectives of an Adoptive Parent

Nebraska’s Safe Haven

by Marcie on September 8th, 2008

Nebraska, the last state in the nation to adopted the “safe haven” law, did so July 18. It allows parents to abandon their unwanted children at hospitals with no questions asked.

What is interesting, and profoundly different, about Nebraska’s law is that it goes way beyond the normal one month old infant “safe haven” that one normally imagines…parents can abandon a child up to the age of 19, including misbehaving teens and even special needs children.

“All children deserve our protection,” said Sen. Tom White, who helped broaden the measure. “If we save one child from being abused, it’s well, well worth it.”

White said it doesn’t matter if that child is an infant or 3 years old or in the care of a parent or baby-sitter. As for what constitutes a minor, he refers to common law, which interprets it to be anyone under age 14.

As of yet, no children have been dropped off but I am wondering what will happen when they do…

is Nebraska’s foster care system ready for emotional and physical special needs children?

Did they recruit more foster parents with those skills and certifications?

Do they have interim care for infants?

Just wondering…
