Multicultural Monday: Nesting Dolls for Children

by Marcie on March 17th, 2008

A traditional nesting doll tells a Russian or Eastern European fairy tale. The one that we purchased in Russia (just outside the Russian Museum) tells the story of the Nutcracker because it has always been a favorite story of mine.

The drawings are ornate and the detail is exquisite. I think that I have mentioned before that AJ loves looking at it. The first time he saw it (months after he was home) he looked at it in awe, looked back at me, and declared, Uka! as if he knew exactly what it was. He immediately began to take it apart.

I gave Nesting Dolls, or matryoshkas, as gifts to people who helped us with AJ’s adoption or with baby showers and they loved them. And I have found a perfect one for your children.

The Gigantic Turnip?rep_code=US-A000580 is one of Russia’s favorite folk tales. Barefoot Books, along with the Golden Cockerel has created this fabulous duo of book and Matryoska for your children.

From Amazon: Each of the 7 pieces nested inside each other has a different animal pictured that goes along with the story of the old man and woman who needed help to pull this huge vegetable out of the ground! Each piece has a different number of animals which makes this a great counting tool.

Also from Barefoot…a Gigantic Turnip Print?rep_code=US-A000580 .
