Medical Issues in Guatemalan Adoptions
Although children available for adoption in Guatemala are placed into fosters homes for much of the first part of their lives they are not without risk for medical issues. I would be remiss if I did not at least touch on the medical status of Guatemalan children and the medical care they receive.
Guatemala is the only country that provides signed relinquishment as well as DNA testing (and as of August 6, two DNA tests must be made to match the birth mother to the child). The purpose of this, according to Dr. George Rogu, Medical Director and Founder of Adoptiondoctors.com, is to “reduce the adoption of children that be obtained by illegal means such as kidnapping, baby buying, coercion. Prior to the DNA testing policy, unscrupulous woman would pose as the child’s birth mother and release the child for adoption for financial motives. Other tests performed upon the birth mother are HIV, syphilis and hepatitis screening.”
Health Factors can include but are not limited to:
- smoke, alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, tranquilizer consumption by birthmothers
- parasitic infections (Dengue, Filariasis, leishmanaiasis, malaria)
- possible neglect at infancy
- anemia
- TB
- Developmental Delay
