Little Interest in Chinese Quake Orphans
Of the 88 orphans eligible for adoption only one child has been adopted.
According to the provincial civil affairs department one reason for the slow response in finding homes for the children is that Chinese couples are hesitant to adopt permanently handicapped children.
Jiang Tao, head of the division in charge of adoption at the provincial civil affairs office, was quoted as saying that adoptive parents preferred children who are under 6 years old and are not handicapped. However, many of the quake orphans sustained physical or other injuries during the quake that are permanent handicaps, according to his office.
Adoptions are not open to international couples yet and as of right now only childless Chinese couples over 30 can be considered as adoptive parents.
It would seem to me that they would want to find homes for these children instead of maintain the rules. In fact, why not allow a couple to adopt two children if they want, especially if they are one of the only ones to want to adopt handicapped children in China?

I agree with you, Marcie–that is so sad. Finding loving homes for these children should be the goal–whether the home is in China, the US, with parents over or under 30, a sibling or two or none…
