Today is the start of the Chinese New Year, one of the most important holidays for Chinese Families. The holiday is celebrated with family gatherings, gift giving, eating, and festive decorations and its all focused on bringing bringing good luck.
The Chinese New Year is not based on the Western calendar but the lunar calender, thus the “late” new year and it typically falls between January 21st and February 20th depending upon the cycles of the moon.
Some activities to do with your family?
Decorate the house:
Hang up signs and posters on the door that represent luck and happiness.
Buy flowers for your home to symbolize spring.
Check out these fun crafts from Kaboose.
Cook Ethnic Foods:
We all know that Chinese Restaurants have “Americanized” foods so why not make Chinese food at home? Food in China is often symbolic; oranges symbolize completeness and wholeness because they are completely round and long noodles symbolize long life.
For Chinese New Year Dishes try A whole chicken, clams or scallops, lobster, rice, spring rolls, dumplings, and fish (with the head and tail intact).
